teaching philosophy

As an instructor, I strongly believe in all students receiving a well-rounded music education. In addition to learning how to play the notes on the piano, my students learn about the music theory and history that contextualize their repertoire. As an avid performer myself, I encourage all students to become comfortable with performing in front of an audience to better develop their skills. I believe not only does this build self-confidence but helps them to formulate their own musical voice from behind the instrument. I have found that learning an instrument requires discipline and dedication; two qualities that are lifelong tools that foster their growth as individuals. Having studied piano for more than 16 years, I have compiled a number of effective teaching methods, techniques, and strategies from my former teachers. Each lesson touches on sight-reading, technique (scales, arpeggios), aural skills, in addition to method book instruction and classical repertoire. I strive to build a safe, welcoming environment in my studio. Supplemental to each student’s one-on-one weekly lesson, I host weekend group lessons as well. In these group sessions, all students of my studio come together to perform for one another in a master class-type setting. We go over concert etiquette – both from behind the instrument and from the audience perspective. To foster music appreciation, we watch operas, biographical movies on composers, as well as listen and reflect on compositions from all periods of music. These group classes accelerate each student’s comprehension of the instrument as well as create a collective support group among one another.

My piano studio has an excellent reputation in the El Paso community for producing superior musicians. I guarantee that your child will receive the best musical education available. I am frequently updating my musical education by attending both the national and state conventions every year. I belong to the El Paso Music Teachers Association, which features monthly programs to upgrade the quality of our teachers. I participate in all of the many local programs the El Paso Music Teachers Association has to offer. I study and keep abreast of all the new software for musical education and purchase it for my studio to further benefit my students. I am eagerly searching for new, motivational tools in the teaching of music and am completely devoted to the personal success and self-esteem of my students.
